The "Two Cultures" avant la lettre

Am 12. und 13. Juli 2016 findet ein internationaler Workshop zur Geschichte der „zwei Kulturen“ der Geistes- und Naturwissenschaften statt, der von Dr. Fabian Krämer in Zusammenarbeit mit den Lehrstühlen für Frühe Neuzeit (Prof. Dr. Arndt Brendecke) und Wissenschaftsgeschichte (Prof. Dr. Kärin Nickelsen) an der LMU sowie dem Münchner Forschungszentrum Fundamente der Moderne organisiert wird. 

In Zusammenarbeit mit der Munich History Lecture der LMU findet am Abend des 12. Juli 2016 von 18:30 bis 20:00 Uhr ein Vortrag von Prof. Dr. Anthony Grafton (Princeton) statt, zu welchem sämtliche InteressentInnen herzlich eingeladen sind.

Abstract des Workshops

Few beliefs about the nature of academic knowledge appear to be less problematic and are more deeply ingrained than the assumption that a wide gulf divides the humanities and the natural sciences. But like many other dichotomies that characterize modernity, this binary opposition is younger than we tend to think. It was in the nineteenth century that academics began to develop a sense of belonging to either the humanities or the sciences. Only after the division had become an accepted fact the philosophical reflection about it gathered momentum. And even then the distinction was not always quite as clear as one might assume. The Workshop “The Two Cultures avant la lettre” will enquire into its (pre-)history and asks: How did the “two cultures” come about? And to what extent were and are they really two?
