Max S. Hering Torres is Full Professor of History at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogotá. Before that he was a lecturer at the Department of History at the University of Vienna. He received his Magister Artium (M.A.) in history and ethnology (minor) from the Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität München and his Doctorate (Dr. phil) in history from the University of Vienna, in 2000 and 2004, respectively. He was editor in chief of the Colombian social history and culture journal: Anuario Colombiano de Historia Social y de la Cultura (2015-2021). He has authored Rassismus in der Vormoderne [Racism in the Early Modern Period] (2006); edited Cuerpos anómalos [Anomalous Bodies] (2008); coedited Historia cultural desde Colombia [Cultural History from Colombia] (2012); El peso de la sangre [The Weight of Blood] (2012), Race and Blood in the Iberian World (2012), Microhistorias de la transgresión [Microhistories of Transgression] (2015), and Las Ilusiones de la igualdad [The illusions of equality] (2020). His most recent book is 1892: un año insignificante. Orden policial y desorden social en la Bogotá de fin de siglo [1892: an insignificant year. Police order and social disorder in Bogotá at the end of the century] (2018). The book received an honorable mention for the Michael Jiménez Award – LASA Boston, Colombia Section. His articles include European early modern and colonial history of body, race, and blood. His current research deals with culture and power, abnormalities, and police in Latin-American history. In 2017 he obtained the distinction of "Meritorious Research" and in 2019 the distinction of "Exceptional Teaching" both by the Faculty of Human Sciences of the National University of Colombia.
