Ph.D. Project:

The Pursuit of Precision. Antonio Augustín's Philology, Antiquarianism, and Counter Reformation (1517-1586)

I am currently working on my doctoral dissertation tentatively entitled “The Pursuit of Precision. Antonio Agustín’s Philology, Antiquarianism, and Counter-Reformation (1517–1586)”. The project focuses on the scholarly and ecclesiastical career of the Spanish bishop savant, whose life and work spanned the period of intense intellectual and religious reconfigurations. I follow him as he manoeuvered between humanistic integrity, service to the king and the pope, and the pastoral duties as the Tridentine Church prelate. I cast Agustín against a wide background of earlier, contemporary, and later scholars to present his work as part of long humanistic traditions.
At this very moment I am preparing an article submission about Agustín’s work on canon law sources and his emendation of Gratian’s decree. I am also researching his activity as an expert called to assist in the Council of Trent. My present focus on the ecclesiastical aspects of Agustín’s work and career aims to correct the hitherto prevalent narrative about him as a humanist devoted almost exclusively to ancient Roman and Greek topics. The whole dissertation project will add to the discussion about the relationship between humanism, humanistic practices, ecclesiastical scholarship, and the Counter-Reformation.
